Fort Ross
The Russian community was established in Northern California in the 1800s due to the creation of the Russian-American Company. The company had an outpost at Fort Ross which was the hub of the southernmost Russian settlements in North America between 1812 and 1841. Fort Ross, in what is now Sonoma County, is a landmark in the history of European imperialism as Spain expanded west across the Atlantic while Russia east across Siberia -- and they met on the opposite side of the world along the coast of California.
Russian Community in the San Francisco Bay Area
In the 1800s, Russian ships often docked at San Francisco Bay and many explorers and scientists used the area their base of operations. The Russian presence was already large in San Francisco and there was a Russian cemetery on what is now Russian Hill. After Fort Ross was closed in 1842, its former manager Peter Kostromitinov came to live in San Francisco and eventually became Russian Vice Consul to establish the first official Russian diplomatic presence.
