A while back I was reading an article about some tips real estate professionals recommend when looking for a house. One is to look at obituaries to check the address of the individual who passed away. If this is an area you are interested in, pass by the house to look at it and make note of it. In a month or two check to see if it goes on sale. The family of the deceased may be willing to negotiate on offers to sell the home.
This same kind of approach can help if you are looking for a job. Only 70 to 80 percent of job openings are published in Help Wanted ads. You can still use your newspaper in your job search. Look at the Business or Money sections of your newspaper where information on local businesses are profiled. Keep note of stories about new businesses or companies that are doing well and are growing. Perhaps an insurance office is opening or a small manufacturer plans on expanding. Keep a record in a notebook or file of businesses that may indicate hiring in the future. In a couple of months, send a resume with cover letter mentioning the story you read. This will highlight your interest and knowledge of the company.
