Getting big brings with it some major new risks for a company. Many fast growing companies have seen their healthy cultures become diluted once they got to a certain size. Many others have seen some slippage in the value of their brand while others have had to face up to quality and financial control issues.

Quite often these issues arise because there is no central strategy for rational and measured growth. Instead there are dozens of small and unrelated activities that are piled on to drive the top line growth. Eventually small conflicts among some of these activities bloom into major discord and control issues.

Is a Bigger Business Really Better?

Getting big for the sake of prosperity is a myth because it has no experiential basis. Wall Street generally measures growth by size and places a premium on getting bigger. The end result though is many companies that find themselves growing like a cemetery or junkyard. They are getting bigger but not better.
